Dalby Village :
..........Is the collection of houses that are blasted by the wind on the West Coast of the Island.
They lie between the steep hill coming down from the Round Table in the South and the steep hill coming up from Glen Maye. The compensation for their exposed location is their awesome seascapes and sky-scapes that give them advanced weather warnings, along with stunning views.

The 63 houses of Dalby are homes to the 130 people who make up our community ............. we have a telephone box now housing a community defibrillator, an irregular bus service, a regular visit from the Library van, a café and Dalby Church and schoolrooms.
Here are some quotes about what life is like in Dalby, by some of the folk living here ..........
Dalby is a place where if you leave your car unlocked .... you come back to find someone has left a dozen eggs on the drivers seat Dalby is a place where your neighbour will bring your washing in for you when it’s raining. Close to the sea, the stream and the mountain washed by clear water and bright air, Scoured by ocean winds and blessed by the breath of God. Dalby is a kind and caring community with support and help in times of trouble. Wonderful countryside, peaceful, away from the bustle of towns. Calm for busy people. As “come overs” we received from the beginning a kind and friendly welcome, which has continued with valued love and support. A great place to live. Living in Dalby is living in the best place on the Island; full of fond memories. When growing up every door was open and every one was treated by us kids as an Aunt or an uncle, and we were watched over by all. Remoteness can often be a challenge, particularly for medical issues, like the time we didn’t make it to the Jane Crookal Maternity Home, and our eldest daughter, now 36 years, was born in the car delivered by her Father. I was born and bred in Douglas and hadn’t even heard of Dalby until I met and fell in love with my husband. As soon as I visited Dalby I knew I wanted to live here for the rest of my life. It is the most beautiful place on the Island, and I am thankful every day that my children can grow up in the best village on the IoM. My first memories of the area are as a little girl being taken to the Wesleyan Chapel at Ballalhargy for harvest services, then back to visit at the cottage where I now live. I didn’t know then that I would marry their grandson! For me, living in Dalby is like being part of a large extended family. I love the beauty of the place and the friendship of the people. My reflections and thoughts on living in Dalby are simple. The love, the kindness and support and miriads of kindnesses of friends and neighbours, and loving pastoral care are all held close in my heart. Quite simply we are blessed in this community of Dalby. Living in Dalby you have an in built instinct and ability to seek out shelter. Dalby always has a friendly face and people you can turn to for help. Dalby is a patchwork of people joined by a quilted landscape. |
